In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
