Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Harassment Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had resulted from the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.

The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
